In last week’s blog we talked about different tips for moving out, and one of those tips had to do with cleaning. Well, since spring is just around the corner, we figure it’s time we talk about spring cleaning.
Declutter your home
One of the most common ways for dirt to build up or for pests and rodents to hide is in between clutter. In order to reduce the likelihood of this happening, and to make cleaning easier and faster, we recommend you get rid of any unwanted items that just take up space. If you think any of these items might be useful to someone, feel free to donate them to a charitable cause.
Clean and reorganize the fridge
You would be surprised what you will find in the fridge. Over time we may leave expired food in there, or sometimes we may spill food or drinks in there and not even notice it because it’s hidden and because the cold temperatures mask the smell. Make sure you empty the fridge and clean all sections and components thoroughly, sometimes reorganizing the fridge is a good way to catch things that sneak through the cracks. Also use this is a chance to throw away any expired food that could make you sick or weaken your immune system.
If you have any trash cans around the house, make sure you clean them out and disinfect them. Even if you’ve garbage bags in the past, make sure you disinfect the trash cans since this is a natural place for bacteria to build up.
Clean the oven
The oven is a common place for bacteria and dirt to build up since it has many hidden corners and sections. There are many solutions that people recommend for cleaning ovens, but keep in mind there is always oven cleaner which is designed for this purpose and contains detailed instructions on the can or bottle so you can’t go wrong. When cleaning the oven, be sure to clean the grills, the stove top, the stove top burners and the hood vent. If necessary, change the hood vent filter and the oven light bulbs as well, since bacteria and grime can build up on these.
Empty out and clean the pantry
If food is left unsealed in the pantry, it can easily attract pests and rodents, especially during the warm months, and rodents and pests can easily spread diseases and cause infections. Also use this as an opportunity to get rid of any expired foods and clean out any dirt that may have built up in the pantry over the winter months.
Clean the dishwasher
A common misconception is that dishwashers are self cleaning. But the reality is that they are not, in fact you can buy dishwasher cleaner. Just like ovens, there are various homemade solutions that people use, but we believe the safest and most full proof solution is to use dishwasher cleaner. Just follow the instructions on the bottle and you are good to go.
Carpets and the corners of floors are common places for dirt and grim to build up, and these can sometimes damage the property and lead to contamination and bad odours. The best way to clean a floor or the carpet depends on the nature and characteristics of the surface, so make sure you do your research before you start cleaning. In some cases, it may be a good idea to hire a professional to clean your floor if you are not sure how to do it. When cleaning carpets, make sure you clean and dry it thoroughly. If moisture is left on a carpet, it can lead to mould which can lead to various medical issues, especially respiratory issues.
Wash your hands
Once you’ve done all this cleaning, make sure you wash your hands. Rinse your hands in water, wash your hands in soap for at least 20 seconds, rinse your hands thoroughly and then dry your hands.
