How to Keep Your Utilities Low

Nobody likes to spend more money than they need to on a product or service. Whether you are a landlord or a tenant, keeping your utility costs low is not only good for your bank account, but it’s also good for the environment. So, this week we wanted to go over some quick and easy ways to keep your utility bills low.

Do Not Leave Appliances on Standby

Some common appliances that have a standby option are TV’s, Entertainment Systems, Sound Systems, Microwaves, Computers and Video Games. When you are not using these appliances or devices, turn them off. The bottom line is if these devices are on, they are consuming energy, so if you aren’t using them, turn them off.

Use Energy Efficient Appliances

Building on the point above, if you have the option to purchase energy efficient appliances, then you should. They may cost a little bit more than the average appliance, but you will make this money back in cost savings. Most of the major household appliances have energy efficient options which will save you money in the long run and are also environmentally friendly. If you don’t have energy efficient appliances, there are still some things you can do to lower your energy consumption.

Wash Your Clothes at a Lower Temperature

Always check the labels on your clothes before you put them in the washing machine. If your clothes or fabrics do not require warm or hot water to be cleaned, then wash them in cold water to reduce your energy consumption unless they are heavily soiled. According to General Electric, an estimated 75 to 90 percent of all the energy your washer uses goes to warming up the water, so switching to colder water can lower your gas or electric bill.

Use Optimal Fridge and Freezer Settings

Running your fridge or freezer at extreme temperatures can increase the amount of energy they consume. We are not recommending you turn them as low as possible to lower your energy consumption, but we are recommending you run them at the optimum temperature, so they don’t consume more energy than is necessary. If you want to know what this sweet spot is, check your appliance manual or contact the manufacturer. It will save you money over the long run and extend the lifetime of your appliances.

Run Your Dishwasher at Night

Some utility providers increase their rates during peak hours when most people are using their appliances and devices. If you want to know if your provider does this, then give them a call and just ask them. If they say they do, then we recommend you run your dishwasher at night since it consumes both electricity and water.
