Handy student deals and discounts

This week we wanted to talk about various ways students can save money on items and expenses around the apartment and in general. By taking advantage of student deals and discounts it puts you in a position to save a lot of money because lets face it, when you are a student, every cent counts.

Home Insurance

Most banks or insurance companies will have home insurance offers for students that are good deals. Therefore, when you are shopping around for this, make sure you ask if they have any deals that you can take advantage of. This applies to auto insurance as well.

Banking

When signing up for a bank account at your local bank, ask them if they have deals for students. This usually comes in the form of bank accounts with limited or no fees, free credit cards and in some cases free consultations on money management and financial planning. The limited or no fees are important when it comes to electronic fund transfers because that’s how most people pay bills or transfer money to their roommates these days.  Most banks will do this to get you as a customer in the hope that they can keep you long term, but it’s a great way to save money.

Cable and Internet

Most cable and internet providers have incentives for students. During your week of welcome, you may actually see these different companies with booths on campus but always keep this in mind when shopping around since you could save a lot of money and some companies may extend your contract even after you graduate.

Cell Phone Providers

This is very similar to cable and internet providers since they may have incentives for students. There are a few companies that offer cable, internet and cell phone services so you may be able to have a one-stop shop for all these at a good price, but take the time to compare what the different companies are offering.

Software and electronics

Some institutions like the University of Alberta have discounts on software for students at the U of A OnTheHub. There is also OnTheHub for other post-secondary institutions, you just need to search for your school and see if they have deals. If you don’t find what you are looking for, try contacting the company directly, some companies that manufacture or sell software or computers sometimes offer deals directly to students.

Student Clubs

Most post-secondary institutions have student clubs and these student clubs sometimes negotiate deals with different product and service providers to offer deals for students who are club members. Sometimes when you join these clubs, they will give you a card that you can use to get discounts at different establishments.

Gyms and fitness centres

Most post-secondary institutions have gyms or fitness centres, which you can use free of charge, or for a minimal fee while you are a student, but certain gyms and fitness centres have good deals for students. Once you are about to graduate, it might be a good idea to look at signing up at a gym while you are a student to secure a good deal, since you may lose access to your school gym once you graduate.

Transport

If you are a student in one of the major cities in Canada, you will usually have local transportation taken care of as part of your student fees. However, if you are planning to travel between cities and provinces there a student discounts available through companies like Greyhound and Red Arrow. If you are planning on flying, be sure to ask the airline or travel agency you are using if they have any discounts available.

Sites, sounds and landmarks

If you are planning on visiting museums, aquariums, zoos, theatres or any other popular landmarks, you may want to check if they have student discounts. Most of them usually do, so this would be a good way to save some money on the fun stuff you like to do.
